Social Studies Vocabulary
OCTOBER:
1. Landform: a natural feature of a land surface.
2. River: a large natural stream of fresh water that flows into a lake or an ocean.
3. Lake: a large body of fresh water surrounded by land.
4. Mountain: a very high piece of land.
5. Peninsula: a piece of land that sticks out from a larger land mass
and is almost completely surrounded by water.
6. Harbor: a sheltered place on the coast of a sea or lake.
7. Bay: a portion of the ocean that is partly enclosed by land.
8. Island: a piece of land surrounded by water.
9. Coast: the land that is next to the sea.
10. Valley: an area of low ground between two hills, usually
containing a river.
11. Prairie: a large area of flat or rolling grassland with few or no
trees.
12. Desert: a dry, often sandy area where hardly any plants
grow because there is so little rain.
13. Oasis: a place in a desert where there is water and plants
and trees grow.
