Course Purpose: Our mission this year will be to show improvement in all areas of communication: writing, speaking, reading fluency, ability to analyze literature, research skills, spelling, and vocabulary by utilizing higher level thinking strategies. We will be using classic and contemporary literature to provide us with examples of successful, fluent writing. All students will be encouraged to find their personal styles and voices while increasing their reading and writing fluencies by learning how to understand and manipulate diction, syntax, imagery, point of view, and detail. Grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and usage will be taught through the writing process, analytical reading, and literature imitation.

Tardies and Absences:

Tardies: Students need to be ready to go when the
tardy bell rings.

If a student is late to class, they will be marked tardy and have to sign the tardy log. The administrators will be handling the consequences for student tardies this year.

Absent Work: Students who have been absent must check the ABSENT WORK FOLDER on the day they return to
school.

Students will have the number of days they were absent
to turn in their work. Work not turned in at the
appropriate time will be considered late.

Please note: Assignments, including projects, assigned
before an absence, are due the day the student returns.

Late Work: Work not turned in on the assigned due date is late.
There will be a penalty for late work. Special assignments, projects, etc do not follow this guideline for late work. These assignments are due on the date they are due. If an assignment is turned in after the class period or after the assignment has been asked for and collected, it is considered late.

1st day late: 70%
2nd day 50%
3rd day late 5 0%

Grading Criteria: Daily/Homework assignments/ Quizzes 50%
Projects/Tests 50%

Class Rules: 1. Be on time
2. Bring ALL materials
3. Be respectful and responsible

*All school rules must be followed as well.

What happens if a rule is broken?

1. Warning
2. 10 minute lunch detention
3. full lunch detention
4. Team meeting with student & detention
5. Parent Meeting
6. Referred to office

Cell Phones: Unauthorized use of cell phones, including texting, will
result in the cell phone being turned over to the
administrators.

Tutorials: Tutorials will be set up on an individual basis. Students
needing extra help need to see the teacher
immediately. Asking for help is highly encouraged.

Student Responsibility: Students need to understand they will be held
accountable for their actions. Students are also
expected to communicate with the teacher if there is a
misunderstanding or concern.

If you would like to discuss any portion of the procedures and requirements for my class, please contact me to schedule a conference. You can reach me at 940-497-4037 or I can also be reached by e-mail: jbartley@ldisd.net.
