POETRY:
HAIKU

•Haiku is a Japanese verse form with three lines.
•Line 1 – 5 syllables
•Line 2 – 7 syllables
•Line 3 – 5 syllables
•Usually about nature

Example: An old silent
pond . . . (5)
A frog jumps into the
pond, (7)
Splash! Silence again. (5)


LIMERICK

•Limerick is a funny poem of five lines
•Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme and have three beats or stress syllables
•Lines 3 and 4 have two beats

Example: A flea and a fly in a
flue
Were caught, so what could they do?
Said the fly, “Let us flee.”
“Let us fly,” said the flea.
So they flew through a flaw in the flue.


There was a young fellow named Hall,
Who fell in the spring in the fall;
“Twould have been a sad thing
If he’d died in the spring,
But he didn’t---he died in the fall.

POETRY:
Lyric – Rhyming Poem
•Expresses personal thoughts or feelings
•Is short
•Describes a brief experience
•Is songlike
•Has a rhyming pattern

Imagery –
•Use of the 5 Senses – helps reader to see, hear, feel, smell and taste
•Use of descriptive words to help reader visualize what they are reading
Example: “Adventures of Isabel” by Ogden Nash
Isabel met an enormous bear,
Isabel, Isabel, didn’t care;
The bear was hungry, the bear was
ravenous,
The bear’s big mouth was cruel
and cavernous.

Example: “Marching Ants” by Ms. Smith
An army of ants silently
go marching across my patio,
So straight is their line—
As their legs keep time—
An army of ants silently
go marching across my patio.

The leader is focused on
his command
To lead his army to the
mound
That has popped up above
the ground
Without losing a single
man.

"All About Me" Collage 8/22-8/26 or 8/29
1.Students will be given a sheet of white paper on MONDAY, 8/22 to create an "All About Me" collage of pictures, words/phrases, drawings, etc. to display their unique personalities.
2. DUE FRIDAY, 8/26 or
MONDAY, 8/29
3. Students will present collage on Friday, 8/26 or Monday, 8/29
4. Each student's collage will be on display for Open House on Thursday, September 1.
