NJHS Membership Qualifications
To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 92 or higher in all core classes. All core class grades are averaged together for the qualifying total. (GPA = 92) Students taking Pre-AP classes will multiply their earned average by 1.1. For example, an 84 in a Pre-AP class is equivalent to a 92. Additionally, potential members must meet high standards of leadership, service, citizenship, and character as shown throughout the year. Qualifying members of the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes will be evaluated by the Faculty Council early in the Spring semester.

Service is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership is based on the student’s participation in community or school activities, or election to an office. To meet the service requirement, the student must have been active in at least one or more service projects in the school and community or have demonstrated willingness to do so.

Citizenship is measured by the student’s participation in civic-related organizations and/or activities OR demonstrated in the classroom.

Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and cooperation with both students and faculty.

Students who are found to be participating in any sort of academic dishonesty will not be considered for membership. Students are screened by a Faculty Council consisting of six members of the faculty chosen by the principal.

When students become members of National Junior Honor Society, a commitment to excellence and service is implied. The high standard of excellence is expected to remain with the student as long as they are a member of the society and beyond.

National Junior Honor Society Membership Maintenance Criteria
Current members are expected to be active members attending meetings of Lake Dallas Middle School National Junior Honor Society’s chapter.

Students will maintain the 92 or higher GPA in all core classes. Students taking a Pre-AP, 7th Math or 8th Pre-AP classes, will multiply their Pre-AP average by a factor of 1.1 to calculate eligibility.

Honor Society implies excellence in areas outside of academics as well. Willingness to help others, being a positive role model, and obeying school policies/procedures are examples of areas where students will be evaluated for continued membership.

Academic dishonesty is immediate grounds for dismissal from the chapter. Students are expected to perform 15 hours of community service per semester. Summer service hours count toward this total. Students are to fill out a community service log and have adult supervisor signatures for each event they attend and work. A variety of venues are appropriate for community service.

Here are a few great examples.
• Become a teacher aide (outside of regularly scheduled aide period)
• Help with NJHS drives and activities
• Boy and Girl Scout service projects
• Church servant projects
• Peer tutoring
• Community parks and street clean-ups
• Nursing home volunteer
• Soup kitchen or shelter volunteer
• Animal shelter volunteer.

Students found not in compliance with membership criteria will be re-evaluated for qualification of membership. If the compliance issues persist, members will be placed on suspension until the situation is resolved.

If the cumulative grade point average drops lower than the required 92 for any grading period, members will have until the next grading period to bring the average back up or face removal from the chapter.

December 2011

Thank you to our wonderful NJHS parents & students who served in our concessions this past weekend for the UIL Academic Competition held at LDMS.  Thank you to the Williams' family (working a huge shift), The Westons (for helping us shop @ Sam's Club for all the items, and set up/clean up) and Cris Buxton (for setting up the schedule)

SOC Adopt A Child participants (those who signed up and are planning to donate money to purchase the items)  Please stop by Mrs. Baird's room before or after school to find out what time we will shop.

Next up:  NJHS is 'adopting' a child for the Christmas season.  We are looking for donations of nominal amounts to help fund the purchases for this child.  Items will be bought the second week of December.  If you can send in a donation, please do so and label it:
NJHS SOC CHILD.

Meeting 3 (Nov 15)
Meeting was held to discuss current events related to NJHS.

Canned Food Drive
is over on Nov 17th. Need volunteers to meet after school on Thursday, Nov 17th @ 4pm in front lobby of school. We will sort cans in Rm 609. Shouldn't take long with many hands. You can earn CS hours, too!

Need hours? Come Sat, Nov 19th to Lake Dallas Elementary to help sort.  Starts at 10 am.

ATTENTION:  help needed at UIL concession
s.  This is our biggest opportunity for CS and for $$$ for NJHS.  LDMS will be hosting the UIL competition held Saturday, December 3rd from 8am to 3 pm.  We will be in charge of selling concessions that day to kids and/or parents/teachers.  We will be in need of parent volunteers and NJHS members to volunteer to work an hour shift.

If we get 14 students to volunteer, we'll have it covered!  Someone will be contacting you soon.

After Thanksgiving Break, NJHS will be helping STUCO sell candy canes.  You can earn CS hours by selling during a lunch period or two.  (be sure Mrs.  Dower is aware that you are from NJHS and are there to help, when you arrive)
T-SHIRTS for TIER 1 Committee.  This is being headed up by two NJHS members and we are looking for slogans to promote exiting at TIER 1 to put on a T-shirt to sell in early February.  All slogans are due Jan 6th (that's right after we return from Winter Break)  We will post the slogans via the web site and vote through that same web site.  After the slogan has been chosen, we will ask for designs to incorporate into the slogan and place on the web site.  We will vote via the web site shortly thereafter.

Spirit of Christmas (Adopt a child)
The NJHS members voted unanimously to 'adopt' a child for the Spirit of Christmas this year.  A few of the members and a few parent volunteers are needed to help shop at Wal-Mart for our child.  This will take place after Thanksgiving, but before December 12th.  Items are due to SOC by Dec 15th.  If your parent is interested in helping chaperone the shopping experience, please have them contact Mrs. Baird via email.
Meeting 2 (Oct 18th, 2011)
Minutes:

Officer Elections will be held the week of Oct 25th. Ballots will be in Mrs. Baird's room and you may come by and vote during passing periods or before/after school.
Fundraisers were discussed. Suggested were Boo-grams, but PTA already had a grab on that. Suggested were Tier I shirts that promote getting out by Tier I and that would meet dressed code here at LDMS. At afternoon meeting, suggestions were made for a wrapping 'party' to wrap gifts for family and friends & teachers, getting donations for the job, and knocking out Community Service (CS) hours as well. Candy Canegrams were also suggested will be confirmed with Mr. Parker shortly.  This is similar to Boo grams, but candy canes are delivered in 7th period to a friend.

Two Liasons for our NJHS were appointed. These ladies are going to be helping the sponsors make contacts in the community as well as do write ups for activities and send these to the paper and/or school web site administrator.

Tutoring @ Falcon Library will be accepted for CS hours.  Just get Mrs. Power (or other teacher on duty) to sign.  Please verify at the beginning of your time, as to why you are there so they are aware of your efforts.

All COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS sheets are due by DEC 9th to Mrs. Baird.  Do NOT put them under my door!  Hand them to me personally.

 NOT DISCUSSED:

   1) Spirit of Christmas Canned Food Drive is approaching!  This is where we put boxes in each HR class and a few other prime locations to collect canned and/or boxed food items to be used at the holiday time for those less fortunate.  The homeroom class in each grade level with the highest can count at the end of the drive will participate in the students vs. teachers basketball game to be held in May 2012.  Details coming in the next few days! Check back soon.
