Shake and Make Ice Cream
What you will need:
4 Tbs. sugar
1 cup whole milk
1 cup half and half
2 tsp. vanilla (it calls for one tsp., but it needed a little more flavor)
6 Tbs. rock salt
1 quart-sized freezer plastic zip lock
1 gallon-sized freezer plastic zip lock bag

How to concoct it:
1. Fill the gallon-sized freezer bag with 6 cups ice. Add rock salt and seal.
2. Pour sugar, milk, half and half, and vanilla into the quart sized freezer bag and seal.
3. Place the quart sized bag into the gallon sized bag and seal.
4. Shake the bag for 5-7 minutes or until frozen.
5. Open the large ziploc and take out quart ziploc and scoop out ice cream. Enjoy!!!!

Tips and Ideas:
Make peppermint ice cream by adding 1/2 tsp. peppermint extract or *3 Tbs. of curshed peppermint stick.
*Try topping your ice cream with sprinkles, nuts, or fresh fruit.
Polymer – Silly Putty
Materials Needed:
Beaker Spoon White School Glue
Water Borax
Tiny plastic measuring cup Food Coloring
Paper Towels Baggie
Instructions:
Making the Borax Solution
1. Measure 200 mL of water into the beaker.
2. Add 1 spoonful of Borax to the water.
3. Dissolve the Borax in the water by stirring the solution.
4. When the 1st spoonful of Borax is dissolved, DRY the spoon and add another spoonful.~~~ Stir! Stir! Stir!
5. Repeat step 4 until your water can no longer dissolve the Borax.~ The solution will be saturated.~ You will notice that the Borax is starting to sink to the bottom of the beaker.
6. Set the beaker out of your way.
Making the Mixture
7. Pour 45 mL of glue into a baggie. (The tiny measuring cup holds 30 mL.) – So you will need to measure 30
mL & pour it into the baggie.~ Then measure 15 mL & add it to the baggie.
8. Add 30 mL of water to the baggie.
9. Add 2 to 3 drops of food coloring to the baggie.
10. Seal the baggie.
11. Mix the water, glue, and food coloring by squeezing the mixture.
Making the Silly Putty
12. Carefully fill the tiny measuring cup to the top with the Borax SOLUTION. (NOT THE DRY BORAX)
13. Open the baggie and pour in the tiny measuring cup of Borax solution.
14. Seal the baggie and MIX! MIX! MIX!
15. When the polymer has formed – open the baggie and divide the polymer with your partner.
16. Make sure you have your data page filled out.
17. Clean up and get table ready for the next class.
Homemade FLOAM
Materials Needed:
2-Tsp. Borax (available in laundry aisle at your grocery store)
½-Cup Water ¼-Cup White Glue
¼-Cup Water 1-Zip Lock Bag (1 qt. Bag is best)
Food Coloring (Optional- kids like colors)
Styrofoam Beads-about 6 oz. (can be found at a craft/hobby store)
Instructions:
1. Dissolve 2-Tsp. Borax Completely in ½-cup (4 oz.) water.
2. In a separate bowl mix ¼-cup (2 oz.) white glue and ¼-cup (2 oz.) water. Add food coloring of your choice to this solution.
3. Pour the glue solution into a zip lock bag. Then add 1-Tbs. of the Borax/water solution to the glue solution. At this point you will think that this stuff will never come out of this bag.
4. Add Styrofoam Beads to the mixture to make “Floam”.
5. Seal bag and knead by hand until thoroughly mixed. Let stand about 15 minutes, and then knead by hand again. Take out of bag when the gel (“Floam”) separates easily from the inside bag walls. It will have the consistency of dough.

You can order the Polymer snow by checking out the following website, www.stevespanglerscience.com. The snow is various prices depending on the amount you buy. You can also search google for making snow and find several other vendors. Students can hydrate and dehydrate the snow over and over again.
